Hidden Villa's History

SUMMARY: Students delve into the history of the Bay Area and California through the study of Hidden Villa's fascinating and inspiring history. They also learn about social justice and the history of many of its struggles through learning about the lives of visionaries Josephine and Frank Duveneck, founders of Hidden Villa. DURATION: 1-5 days or more GRADES: 3nd-5th

California State Standards
These lesson ideas support the social studies standards for 3rd and 4th grade. Emphasizing reading comprehension and fluency, these lessons support state reading standards in all grades.
Hidden Villa Goals

The Hidden Villa valley is connected to many of the defining moments in our local and state history, including the life of the Ohlone Native Americans, the Spanish Missionaries, and the Gold Rush. Later in history, Josephine and Frank Duveneck were involved with some of the social justice struggles of 20th century California. Students' connections to Hidden Villa, then, can be used as a way to engage in a critical study of past and present.

Lesson Ideas

Please Note: This unit will be greatly expanded over the next two years.

  • At the momment we can offer you a wonderful readers' theater based on one of Josephine Duveneck's own campfire stories about the history of Hidden Villa (download options). Divide your students into groups to read and prepare their act of the the play, or spend more time reading, studying vocabularly and practicing for fluency.
  • Read the short history of Hidden Villa located in the kid section of this webpage, either as a whole-class shared reading or in small groups as a reciprocal teaching activity. Then guide a class discussion about the social justices struggles in which the Duvenecks were involved. You can extend this study by reading selected children's books that offer other stories and perspectives. I recommend:
    • Holocaust:
      • Luba, The Angel of Bergen Belsen, by Luba Tryszynska-Frederick (Powerful picture book).
      • Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry (Mid-level chapter book).
      • Jacob's Rescue by Malka Drucker and Michael Halperin (Particularly engaging story of brave allies during the holocaust appropriate for older, skilled readers and thinkers).
    • Japanese Concentration Camps:
      • So Far From the Sea, by Eve Bunting (Picture book).
      • The Bracelet, by Yoshiko Uchida (Picture book).
    • Farm Laborers Movement
      • Harvesting Hope, by Kathleen Krull (Picture book story of Cesar Chavez's life.)
      • Migrant Worker: A boy from the Rio Grande Valley, by Diane Hoyt-Goldsmith (Photo documentation, non-fiction).
      • The Cicuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child, by Francisco Jimenez (Chapter book memoir).
