Rolly's Race
“Rolly rolls across the bunny loop, crossing the finish
line and…. she won!” shouted the deer with the
microphone.
“There’s my Rolly,” said Ms. Roger, Rolly’s mom, with
a big smile.
“I heard you won the big race,” said Dad.
“Yes,” said Rolly. Then she explained how she had dodged leaves that
were falling down off trees to win the race. Then, how she had stood up talking
with the microphone in front of the animals watching the race.
After she told everything about her day, her dad offered her a wonderful surprise. “So,
what do you want to do this week, my little racer?” her dad said with a
big smile. “Anything you want, it’s yours for this one week.”
“I want to go to Bug’s Donuts,” Rolly whispered to her parents.
She felt a bit embarrassed because that was where you ate junk food, but it was
every one’s favorite place.
When
they got there it was very full.
“Look at all these animals. It’s as if we were at the fly-market,” shouted
Rolly. “Look at all these different types of donuts I could eat! I want
that one,” she said pointing to the biggest one. After finishing the
first one in just one bite, she wanted more. Within 10 minutes she had eaten
a total
of 33 donuts! One
whole, wonderful week passed. Every day Rolly’s proud
dad took his little racer to Bug’s Donuts to celebrate.
On the last day of the week Rolly woke up to the rain pounding
on the ground above her. She woke up quickly, very excited to
see herself -the great racer - in a puddle mirror.
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh,” she suddenly screamed so that all the animals
in the valley could hear. Rolly was so surprised she fainted. When she woke up
again several hours later she was in the medical help center.
“What happened?” asked
Rolly, trying to remember.
You fainted!” cried her father.
Rolly was still thinking hard to remember what happened. Then she remembered
the vision she saw in the puddle. “Oh!”
‘I’m afraid you have gotten overweight,” cried her father.
“Oh well, that doesn’t matter, so long as I can walk,” said
Rolly as she got up. “Nooooooo!” She fainted again.
When
Rolly woke up, her parents took her back to their habitat where her friends
tried to help her. They brought her healthy food, her favorite toys and
new leaves for her bed. They even tried to take her to the gym. But
it didn’t
work: she couldn’t move, roll or run. She was too fat to do anything.
The whole valley heard through the leaf-news that Rolly the racing champion
was too overweight to even walk. They rushed to help her loose weight, but
she was getting fatter and fatter by the week.
What
they didn’t know was that Rolly could still crawl
just a little. When no one was looking she was sneaking out to
go to the Bug Donuts, next door - she was addicted. Rolly’s parents were worried, why wasn’t
she loosing weight when so many people were helping her? They
decided to
hire a snail spy.
Every night the snail stayed in front of Rolly’s door.
He would slowly put his antennae up to the window. Then, whenever
Rolly looked at the window he would quickly retreat into his
shell.
One
night as he was napping in the cold he heard foot steps
outside his shell. He woke up quickly and peeked out
of
his shell. He
saw Rolly crawling slowly into the Bugs Donut store. “So
that’s why she isn’t loosing weight!” he
thought to himself.
The
next morning, Rolly’s parents
had a serious talk with Rolly and grounded her for a whole
week. However, she still sneaked
out to the store next door when they weren’t looking.
Finally, her parents decided to move away from downtown to
where there
were no stores.
One
morning, several weeks later, Rolly woke up to go get
a drink of water. She didn’t even realize
she was walking normally again until she opened her eyes,
as if she was barely a baby.
“ Thank you, thank you, thank you! Mom! Dad! I can walk again!!”
“
That’s wonderful news!” exclaimed Rolly’s mom. “I
heard on the leaf-news that there is a big race tomorrow. You
better hurry up and practice if you want to join!”
“
Thanks Mom!” shouted Rolly with excitement.
The next morning Rolly was really nervous. As she walked
to the starting line there were lots of boys laughing at
her.
She tried
to ignore them, but it was hard.
It
was 1:55pm; she did a few stretches. It was 1:58pm,
she wished the boys would
stop laughing. It was 1:59pm
with 30
seconds to
go and the boys were still laughing.
“
All racers ready! Ready, set… roll!!”
Going up the mountain was hard. Rolly wasn’t doing
very well. She keep getting farther and farther behind the
others.
She started to walk. “I will not give up,” she
thought to herself.
When
she got to the top of the mountain, she began to
roll her way down. She couldn’t believe it! She
was going ten times faster than before. Her extra weight
was helping her roll faster
than ever.
She
quickly caught up to the boys. “See
ya at the finish line!” she shouted as she rushed
past. Down the zip-zag path she rolled. She was ahead
of everyone now. Then, crashing
across the finish-line she….WON! |
