Hidden Villa Guidelines ~ Before Trip

Before the Overnight:

  1. Prepare the students in the classroom by reviewing with them the purpose of the overnight, what their responsibilities will be, the rules to follow, proper etiquette while at Hidden Villa and what they need to bring.
  2. Divide the students into 4 groups for hiking and farm chores - or three groups for the hiking if you have a small class. (We recommend the groups be the same for both activities since it is easier to coordinate). Groups can decide on a Hidden Villa related name (e.g. Banana slugs, etc.) for easy identification.
  3. Contact the Hostel, (650) 949-8648, at least two weeks before arrival to arrange cabin assignments. One adult must be assigned to each cabin to supervise and to sleep. Two adults should be assigned to Blodgett’s Bunkhouse, one for each room. Make a list of individual cabin assignments, including adult chaperones. Please see Hostel map included in this packet.
  4. Secure a completed permission slip and health form from each student. Have these forms in your possession during the overnight.
  5. Plan a menu for the number of overnight participants. Purchase and bring food. (Include the students in this if possible). Purchase food with as little packaging as possible to reduce garbage. Please do not bring paper products. The Hostel has all the dishes you will need. Each person can bring a small towel, bandana or handkerchief for a napkin.
  6. Instruct all parents in attendance on their responsibilities for the overnight. Their role is to help coordinate and supervise--this is NOT a vacation. No smoking or alcoholic beverages allowed on the premises.
  7. Plan for any special activities during the evening program, campfires (unless the HVEEP staff is taking care of this) or free time, as appropriate to your individual program. We have found this is essential for a successful visit. Children are often over-excited by the situation and are unable to use their energy constructively. A supervised activity during free periods can successfully channel their excitement in a positive manner.
