Science ~ Research Findings

During the Hidden Villa field trips, students are encouraged to learn by physically exploring their environment, making close observations, participating in the natural cycles on the farm and in the wilderness, and developing their sense of wonder, curiosity and awe. The progression of field trips and integrated classroom curriculum in the Partnership Program builds on these student experiences. My research confirmed that a hands-on approach engages students intellectually and emotionally in science learning. I also found that returning several times to Hidden Villa allowed my students to make increasingly complex connections with what they had already learned, creating a clearer and longer-lasting understanding of their local environment and of ecological concepts.

Benefits:

  • Students gain a deeper understanding of the state science standards related to the environment. This can make the teaching of science easier for the classroom teacher and provide students more opportunities for success in the subject.
  • Students develop a sense that science is fun. As science becomes increasingly important in our society (for a number of reasons, such as deteriorating environment, rapid advances in science and technology fields, and the rising demand for science skills in the work place), it becomes increasingly important for students to learn more science. Extensive research has shown that many students - particularly girls, Latinos, African-Americans, and students from low-income families - feel intimidated by science from an early age. Our school system must find ways to involve these students in the study of science. We can do this by making science fun and engaging opportunities for academic success. With its deep committment to social justice, Hidden Villa is a wonderful place to inspire scientific inquiry and interest across gender, racial, and economic lines.
