My time as a volunteer at Hidden Villa has been a unique and treasured experience. Not only am I enamored with the beautiful natural landscape, I am also surrounded by a rich history while working with the development team in the Duveneck House.

This summer I contributed my time to help create the new Hidden Villa website. When I first arrived, I did not have a lot of website building skills, but my amazing mentor, Bryden Johnston, taught me how to use Adobe Photoshop and Joomla! Now I know how to manipulate images in Photoshop and add a border or shadow on images before uploading them to the website. I can even make entire website pages by myself, complete with content, pictures and links! While I have learned many technical skills this summer, I think the most important thing I learned during my time as a volunteer is about Hidden Villa’s mission as a non-profit organization. It has been an eye-opening experience to see sustainable agriculture practices in action, hear and watch the summer campers and understand the point behind farm tours. All of these activities allow the community an opportunity to connect with nature and learn more about their environment.

I am so inspired by Hidden Villa’s mission to promote a just and sustainable future that I have decided to continue volunteering past my 100 hour mark as part of my college coursework. In the future, I hope to pursue a career in the field of publishing. I know that I can be a benefit to any company with the computer skills and communications experience that I have gained through volunteering at Hidden Villa. More importantly, I plan on spreading Hidden Villa’s message about the environment and social justice wherever I can by sharing my experiences here with my family, friends and community.
