Camp Director


The Camp Director executes the program planning, marketing and registration strategy, risk mitigation, ACA accreditation process and hiring of summer staff and will have direct oversight for the day-to-day operation of the Summer Camp program. This position is responsible for implementing high quality, experiential education that aligns with Hidden Villa’s mission, furthers the strategic plan, and achieves established program goals. Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Programs, the Camp Director is the lead supervisor for Summer Camp’s seasonal and year-round team including the Summer Camp Assistant Director, and works collaboratively with the Programs team throughout the year to create and offer opportunities that enhance and support Summer Camp. The Camp Director collaborates with all of Hidden Villa’s teams and departments to support the best fulfillment of Hidden Villa’s mission as we work towards our mission of a just and sustainable future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the Summer Camp Program, in accordance with the organizational mission and strategic plan, while Lead ACA accreditation process for the camp program and be an active ACA accreditation visitor
  • Implement strategies to attain, recruit, hire, and onboard diverse and skilled candidates for summer camp positions
  • Plan and implement summer staff training including both initial and ongoing training
  • Lead development and behavioral management for all seasonal summer staff, including written evaluations of seasonal leadership staff
  • Develop and ensure adherence to policies as they pertain to the supervision of campers and staff
  • Create and foster an atmosphere for developing professionalism, positive morale, and well-being among camp staff
  • Manage physical and emotional risk and safety for all of camp. Assume leadership in emergency situations
  • On call duties during the Summer Camp season, including living on-site
  • Manage Summer Camp’s online application system and social networking of new and alum staff
  • Oversee camper registration; and support camp family communications and customer service
  • Develop age appropriate curriculum that supports camp mission; develop curriculum in collaboration with other Hidden Villa teams and share curriculum across the organization
  • Collect and analyze program evaluations and feedback to inform program adaptations and creation
  • Oversee operations and facilitation of activities of the ropes course and swimming pool for Programs
  • Manage and lead family camp and teen programs for year round camper families and teen campers
  • Attend regular department, team, and organization meetings; conduct regular program meetings
  • Collaborate with key community partners and organizations in co-creating meaningful program opportunities and access
  • These are not the only duties to be performed; some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required

Candidate Qualifications

  • Excellent organization skills and experience managing program logistics
  • Must be able to work independently and calmly, with attention to detail, under pressure with shifting priorities
  • Experience with supervising and training seasonal staff using methods to address a diverse group
  • Ability to observe behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to be an excellent listener, mentor and inspire young adults through professionalism
  • Experience with responding to emergency situations
  • Must be computer literate with a proficiency in MS Office programs, Google suite and database applications.
  • Experience or ability to gain necessary experience for management of swimming pool and ropes course
  • Familiarity and experience with the American Camping Association Standards and accreditation process
  • CPR & First Aid certified or willing to obtain.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Spanish language fluency is not required, but strongly preferred.

  • At least one prior season of administrative or supervisory experience in an organized camp or similar environment
  • At least 25 years of age

Terms of Employment

This is a full-time, year-round, exempt position. The compensation package includes an annual salary of $65,000. Year round, exempt summer staff are also entitled to 2 weeks (10 working days) off after the conclusion of summer camp in addition to regularly accrued time-off. The Camp Director is expected to live on site throughout the summer months and year round housing is available on the property for this position. This position will qualify for a benefits package that includes vacation, sick leave, medical, dental, vision, health and retirement benefits. Occasional weekend, evening work, and overnight work required. Extended work hours are expected during the summer season. The Camp Director is required to be on-call and on-site while campers are onsite during the Summer Camp season.
