Austin’s relationship with the Duveneck family and Hidden Villa goes back to when his family moved to Lawrence Lane as one of the original Lawrence Tract families in 1952. He spent his youth as a Hidden Villa camper and counselor in the 1960s. The Duvenecks treated him like another grandson, and he considers himself blessed to have been so close to them. For most of his teen years, he roamed Hidden Villa on foot and horseback. He also served as a docent and leader of visiting school groups.

Austin has touched a lot of bases during his life. He was one of the original Whole Earth Truck Store and Catalog members before entering the work he spent most of his life in, public transportation. His focus has been on light rail and commuter rail, and he led the systems in San Jose, Seattle, Denver, and Dallas. After his retirement, he has provided support to new systems in OKC and Ottawa.

Austin lives in the South County area with his wife of 50 years. His two daughters and their families are near and provide great love and comfort for him.

David Duveneck and Austin have been friends for almost 60 years.
