Description
Curious about composting but not sure where to begin? Join us for an interactive workshop where you’ll explore how composting works and learn how to start your own at home.
We’ll begin with a guided tour of Hidden Villa’s compost operations, followed by a discussion on best practices for home composting, including balancing “greens” and “browns,” vermicomposting with red wiggler worms, and how to properly use finished compost in your garden.
This workshop will be led by Nyssa Kansal, a junior at The Harker School and an intern with Hidden Villa’s Community Programs Department. Outside of school, Nyssa is passionate about sustainable agriculture, having been a student researcher at the Stanford Farm where she experimented with nitrogen fixing techniques. At Hidden Villa, she has helped organize and lead weekend pop-ups, including a hands-on leaf painting workshop exploring plant pigments and seasonal change. Passionate about sustainability and environmental science, Nyssa is especially excited to lead the upcoming composting workshop, where she hopes to empower community members to reduce waste and adopt more sustainable practices at home.

Good to Know
Participants who would like to get started are invited to bring a bin or bucket from home. We’ll help you drill ventilation holes, provide a starter layer of “browns,” and share recommendations for sourcing worms.
All attendees will receive a printed composting guide with troubleshooting tips and access to our online composting resources for continued support.
Please wear close-toed shoes and comfortable outdoor clothing. We will be outdoors and walking around the farm. All experience levels welcome!
